John Jacob Astor was born 10 June 1822 in Manhattan, New York, United States to William Backhouse Astor (1792-1875) and Margaret Alida Rebecca Armstrong (1800-1872) and died 22 February 1890 Manhattan, New York, United States of unspecified causes. He married Charlotte Augusta Gibbes (1825-1887) 9 December 1846 in Trinity Church, Manhattan, New York, United States.
He was a prominent member of the Astor family, becoming the wealthiest family member in his generation and the founder of their English branch.
