Biography
John Jay was born 12 December 1745 in New York City, New York County, New York, United States to Peter Jay (1704-1782) and Mary Van Cortlandt (1705-1777) and died 17 May 1829 Katonah, Westchester County, New York, United States of unspecified causes. He married Sarah Van Burgh Livingston (1756-1802) 28 April 1774 in Elizabeth, Essex County, New Jersey, United States.
He was an American statesman, patriot, diplomat, Founding Father, abolitionist, negotiator, and signatory of the Treaty of Paris of 1783. He served as the second Governor of New York and the first Chief Justice of the United States (1789–1795). He directed U.S. foreign policy for much of the 1780s and was an important leader of the Federalist Party after the ratification of the United States Constitution in 1788.
