John Logan "Jack" Brown was born on 15 October 1913 at 27 Rochester Street, Belfast, the youngest of three children of William Blair Brown, a printer, and his wife Margaret, née Logan. The family later moved to 45 Haddington Gardens.
He married Annie Mills at Ravenhill Presbyterian Church on 20 March 1940, and was working as an accountant. Their first son, John Logan "Ian" Brown, was born on 27 January 1941. Their second, Stephen Brown, was born on 13 September 1942. A third, Michael Brown, was born in 1944. By this time the family was living at 108 Ardenlee Avenue, Belfast.
Jack's father William died in 1944. His sister Ina died of breast cancer in 1945. His brother-in-law, Bob McKibbin, died in 1947 in an accident on board the Reina del Pacifico, a liner in dock on Belfast Lough for a refit after being used as a troop ship during the war.
After qualifying with a Belfast firm of Chartered Accountants, he joined the Northern Ireland Housing Trust as Finance Officer in 1948. The Housing Trust had been set up in 1947 to provide and allocate public housing alongside local councils.
A daughter, Elizabeth Jill Brown, was born on 5 September 1955. His father-in-law, Rainey Mills, died in 1958. By this time Jack and family were living at 442 Ravenhill Road, Belfast. His mother Margaret died in in 1963. Ian married Vivien Derbyshire, and they had two sons and two daughters. Stephen married Paddie Magill in 1967, and they had three sons. Michael married Margaret Easton, and they had a son and a daughter.
He was acting General Manager of the Housing Trust for its last year, 1971, and in January 1972 he joined its successor body, the Northern Ireland Housing Executive, as Director of Finance. The Housing Executive took over all public housing in Northern Ireland from the Trust and the councils. He was awarded the OBE in 1976.
His sister Lila McKibbin died in 1978. Jill married Gordon Howell, and they had a daughter and two sons, but she died of breast cancer in 1998.
After Annie died in 2004, Jack left 442 Ravenhill Road and moved in with his son Ian and his family. He died in the Ulster Hospital in Dundonald on 9 January 2009, having spent his last few weeks at Towell House nursing home on the Kings Road. His funeral was at Mountpottinger Methodist Church, and he was buried at Dundonald Cemetery.
