Obituary
The death of Mr. John Maher, an old pioneer and well known grazier of the Tamworth district, occurred at his residence, "Masondale," Woolbrook, on Tuesday.
The late Mr. Maher was born in County Tipperary, Ireland, 72 years ago. He emigrated to Anstralia at the age of 20 years, and for the past 50 years has resided in this district.
The pioneers of those days had to face many trials and tribulations. The sheep runs were not fenced, and consequently it was necessary to have a shepherd in attendance. For some years Mr. Maher acted in that capacity for the late Mr. Gibson, of Bendemeer.
Deceased subsequently selected on Surveyor's Creek, Woolbrook, and by his superabundance of pluck and energy proved most successful in sheep raising generally. The late Mr. Maher was widely known and respected throughout the Tamworth district, and by his genial disposition and open, countenance made quite a wide circle of friends. He was a particular friend of his Lordship, Dr. O'Connor, Bishop of Armidale.
Some thirty-five years ago when Tamworth was attached to the diocese of Maitland, the present Bishop then used to traverse the northern tablelands on horseback, and was a frequent visitor to Mr. Maher's residence. That past friendship remained right up to the time of deceased's death.
Mr. Maher was married twice, and was predeceased by his second wife by some four years.
He is survived by seven sons and two daughters. They are: Mr. Michael Maher (Woolbrook), Cr. Daniel Maher (Woolbrook), Mr. John Maher (Moonbi), Mr James Maher (Tamworth), Mr. Patrick Maher (Moonbi), Mr. Thomas Maher (Moonbi), and Mr. Martin Maher (Moonbi), Mrs. Robinson (Woolbrook), and Mrs. Lord (Woolbrook).
Mrs. Eggleton, who died at Newcastle about twelve months ago, was also a daughter of deceased.
The funeral took place yesterday, when the interment was made at Bendemeer.
