John Maple had a small furniture shop at 145 Tottenham Court Road, London, and his business began to develop about the time that his son (who had been born above the shop) joined it around 1862. It was eventually employing hundreds of staff and became a limited liability company with a capital of two million pounds in 1890, with son John as chairman.
