Biography
Ensign John Snow, Jr. was born 13 May 1668 in Woburn, Middlesex County, Massachusetts to John Snow (1640-1706) and Mary Green (1644-1712) and died 21 March 1735 Hudson, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire of unspecified causes. He married Sarah Stevens (1672-1727) 13 February 1693 in Woburn, Middlesex County, Massachusetts.
The Snow Family, Boston Transcript, Note 2685 pt II, says John Snow married his cousin's sister-in-law, Sarah Stevens. After moving to Chelmsford from Woburn he moved to Dunstable. Nottingham West was set off from Dunstable and later called Hudson, New Hampshire.
The history of Hudson (Kimball Webster) says John Snow was among the first settlers in town. All the town meetings, with a single exception, were held in his home, until the first meeting-house was completed. The exact date of his settlement in Hudson is not known. He was assessed for 1733-34 only. He was first town treasurer. The town records give his d. date as Mar 21, 1735. The inscription on a headstone in a small burial ground near his former residence does not agree with the records and gives his age as "68 yrs. 4 mo. 3 days" This would make his death Sept. 16, 1736. He appears to have had the title of Ensign.
From _Town in Transition, Hudson, NH._ by the Hudson History Comm., Hudson Historical Society, Inc,. 1977, Phoenix Publishing, Canaan, NH, p. 71: "A three day festival held in June, 1933, commemorated the 200th anniversary of Hudson from the time it emerged as Nottingham, Massachusetts, and separated from the Province of Massachusetts. The first charter, granted by the Assembly of Massachusetts January 4, 1733, established its identity as a separate town. The first Town Meeting was held at the home of Ensign John Snow on May 1, 1733 subsequent to an order from the General Court of Massachusetts that it should be held three months after the charter was granted."
