John Wight was born 1627 in Hareby, Lincolnshire, England to Thomas Wight (1607-1674) and Alice Roundy (1609-1665) and died 28 August 1653 Wight's Lane, Medfield, Norfolk County, Massachusetts of unspecified causes. He married Anne Unknown 1652 in Massachusetts.

In 1652, Thomas Wight transferred land "unto John Wight his sonne." He was one of the 13 original settlers of Medfield, going there with his father. He received as his grant for a house lot "six acres abutting on Thomas Wight on the southwest all else on waste land." Wights Lane let from North Street to this place. John was made a freeman in Medfield, 18 May 1653. John was the first to die among the first 13 settlers. Administration upon his estate was granted to "Ann late wife of John Wight in behalfe of herselfe and ye child she goes withall." His Inventory of estate taken 3 Oct 1653 amounted to L171.02.09, which was ordered equally divided between Ann and her yet unborn child. In 1652 his estate was L88.

Marriage & Family

His wife Anne Unknown - Unconfirmed was part of a large immigrant family - they most likely married in Massachusetts, early 1650.

Their daughter, Abiel Wight (1654-1713) was born shortly after his death.

Research Notes

Wife of John Wight

  • It is NOT Anne Goodenow who shows up nowhere in the extensive Goodenow Family genealogy who were neighbors and had a child married to one of John's siblings.
  • Is it Anne Burnappe? - but there is no evidence of her migration to America when the rest of her family remained in England.
