John de Grey, 1st Baron Grey of Rotherfield was born circa 1271 to Robert de Grey (c1246-c1295) and Joan de Valoines (c1250-c1312) and died 17 October 1311 of unspecified causes.

"John de Grey, then twenty-four years of age (1294), who, soon after his doing homage, had livery of his inheritance; and in the 25th Edward I. had summons to the parliament, then held at Westminster, as a Baron. This nobleman appears to have taken part in the Scottis wars of Edward I. His lordship m. Margaret, daughter and co-heiress of William de Odingsells, of Maxtock, in the county of Warwick, and dying in 5th Edward II., was s. by his son,"
