Jonas Putnam was born in 1752 in Sutton, Massachusetts to Asaph Putnam and Sarah Park. He was baptized in Sutton, Massachusetts on August 16, 1752. He and his family moved to Queensbury, New York before the American Revolution.

Jonas served during the American Revolution in 1776 in Albany and New York City, New York. Jonas married Rhoda (Unknown) in 1779. Jonas went on to serve during the American Revolution in Captain Shadrach Phelp's company, Colonel Cornelius Douty's regiment from August 1, 1780 to August 4, 1780. They took part in the alarm of Saratoga, where Jonas received 14.0 pay for 3 days service. He served again in the same company from October 2, 1781 to October 8, 1781 in White Creek, Washington County, New York. A Pay Roll ordered by General Stark to White Creek shows Jonas receiving 0.18.0 pay for 6 days service. Around 1781, Jonas lived in Vermont. He later moved to Albany County in the early 1780s.

Jonas Putnam sold 100 acres of Lot 8 for 564 pounds and two shillings to John Glen on August 18, 1785 in Albany County, New York. He appeared in the census in 1790 in Saratoga Springs, Albany County, New York. The census information is 2-2-2. In the 1790s, the family moved to Scipio, Cayuga County, New York and they appeared there in the census of 1800. The census information is 01101-00101. He may have died in 1806 in Fairfield, Butler County, Ohio.
