Research Notes

From the genealogical writings of Amos Otis: "Joseph Collins of Eastham, Mass., probably came from Cambridge with Capt. Richard Knowles."

The only persons by the name of Joseph Collins of whom a record can be found, in that locality, at that time, are the one mentioned and Joseph Collins, son of Henry Collins, "The starch maker," who was too old to have been the Joseph Collins of Eastham, and further he was a prominent man in Lynn and lived there all his life. So while it is not proven that Joseph Collins was the son of John Collins of Salem, 1643, it is quite probably that he was, and that he was brought from Cambridge by Capt. Richard Knowles. The first definite record that we have of Joseph Collins is in the Eastham church records, now in the office of the Town Clerk, in Orleans. "Marriages. Joseph Collins and Ruth Knowles. March 20, 1671-2."

Joseph Collins was constable in 1700. Was on the jury several times and was one of the appraisers of the estate of Samuel Smith in 1690. This is one of the events that show that he was closely connected with the Smith family. His first wife, Ruth Knowles, died Aug. 28, 1714, and he married a second wife, Sarah Pike, whom he mentions in his will. After his death she married Capt. Christopher Stout. They lived for a time in Provincetown, then removed to Cape Elizabeth, Maine, where she died.

The will of Joseph Collins is preserved in the files of the Probate Court, in Barnstable, Mass. It gives certain effects to his daughter, Lydia Higgins and her husband, Isaac Higgins.

A fine Dragon table cloth to the church in North Eastham, for an altar cloth. He mentions his oldest son, John Collins. To his wife, Sarah, he gives one third of his estate and names her executrix. The remainder of his estate is to be equally divided between his living four sons and three daughters. (M.D. v. 6. p. 204)
