Joe "Roxey" Roxbury began his professional baseball career in 1935, playing 11 seasons as a pitcher.
He played C-level ball in the 1935, 1936, and 1938 seasons for the Detroit-affiliated Henderson Oilers (East Texas League). In 1937, he pitched for the Charleston Senators (Mid-Atlantic League), also a Detroit affiliate.
Partway through the 1938 season, Joe moved up to class B ball, playing for the Boston affiliated Evansville Bees and the class A1 Detroit team in the Texas League - the Tulsa Oilers. He took spring training that year with the Toledo Mud Hens alongside Dizzy Trout and Joe Greenberg.
His record year, 1939, he had a 27-4 win-loss record with the Jackson Senators (Mississippi), managed by former Chicago Cub 2nd-baseman Footsie Blair. He played for that class B Boston affiliate into 1942, save a bump up to A1 ball in 1940, pitching for Boston's Memphis Chickasaws affiliate.
Joe played briefly during the 1941 season with the Philadephia Phillies, where he was known as "Barber Joe" because he did haircuts while on the road with the team, having been a barber since age 14.
He made it to class AA in 1943-44 in the Detroit organization, pitching for the Buffalo Bisons, and wrapped up the 1944 season with the Atlanta Crackers.
Joe's career in baseball finished up with the Milwaukee Brewers in 1945.
