Family records, greatly augmented in October 2020 from correspondence with Antony Houlton, who has Joseph's autobiography and letters
Ω Birth
One of his grandchildren, Eva Heycock, wrote on the back of a photograph of his wife (roughly - based on much later typed transcription) as follows:
This photo is of Mrs Houlton, my Grandmother.
She was Sarah Houlton an Heiress wife of Dr Houlton.
As Sarah Dixon she inherited her estate - Her brother had Fairley Castle in Wilshire
Sir Thomas Houlton later on and now I hear Sir
lives there
This belongs to Eva Heycock - take care of it please.
There is a Farleigh Castle in Wiltshire or just over the border, near Trowbridge. It was owned by Houltons. But their published lineage does not mention this Joseph although it has several Josephs. "This family, one of antiquity in the Isle of Wight, settled in Wiltshire in the reign of James I" - Burke's Commoners IV 602. Here they are (with rough date range estimates):

Birth years for the first four may not match 1841 census because the 1841 census rounded ages to multiples of 5 years from 15 on. Young Joseph became a surgeon, working from the same address as his father. Susanna was still unmarried at the 1861 census; her later hospital admission record shows her second name definitely "Houlton", as do family records.
Elizabeth's older sisters appear in 1901 census of England. Siblings are on 1841 census: Joseph 20*, Sarah 20*, Mary 15*, Cathrine 15*, Susan 12, Elizabeth 8, Timothy 3. "Elizabeth" later had her name spelled "Elisabeth"; of course, the "z" was written not by her and possibly not by either of her parents at the census enumeration. NB - revise this section after more study of Antony's work.
