Capt. Joseph Sawtelle was born 13 April 1777 in Athol, Worcester County, Massachusetts, United States to Richard Sawtell (1751-1838) and Sarah Grout (1757-1846) and died 1832 Atlantic Ocean of Lost at sea. He married Sabra Nickerson (1785-1840) 1 June 1803 in Provincetown, Barnstable County, Massachusetts, United States.
He was lost at sea with all hands in 1832 while commanding the brigantine Ocean.
