Joshua Rice was born 19 October 1661 in Marlborough, Middlesex County, Massachusetts to Samuel Rice (1634-1685) and Elizabeth King (-1667) and died 23 June 1734 Marlborough, Middlesex County, Massachusetts of unspecified causes. He married Mary Sawyer (1671-1766) 1692 in Middlesex County, Massachusetts.
Biography
Joshua Rice md Mary Sawyer (1671-1766) and resided in Marlborough MA, where he died 23 June 1734 at age 73 years, 2 mos and 4 days. He was a proprietor of Worcester, and haad 30 acres of land granted to him there in 1718, at which time he resided there. A cellar hole, not many years since, marked the spot where his dwelling-house stood, and which was used as a garrison while in his occupation. Worcester records contain no account of the family.
When he returned to Marlborough is unknown. Two of his sons settled in Worcester and probably inherited his lands in that town. His widow Mary Sawyer (1671-1766) died at Marlborough, Dec 1766 - aged 95.
Estate of Joshua Rice
There was some delay in settling The Estate of Joshua Rice, as appears by probate papers at Cambridge. Administration was granted to his son, Andrew Rice, 25 May 1741 - "the widow and eldest son refusing to serve." On 29 May 1741, "at the desire of the guardians of children of Zephaniah Rice, deceased, the remaining children were cited to court." Estate settled on 04 Apr 1743. Widow's dower appraised 20 Jan 1767 and distributed 03 Apr 1767, between Samuel Rice of Worcester, Andrew Rice, Sarah Rice and granddaughters Mary, wife of Jacob Hemenway, and Anna, wife of Reuben Miles.
