Biography
Joshua Wells was born in 1664. He is the youngest son born to William Wells and Mary Youngs. Joshua married Hannah Tuthill on January 19, 1686 and they were the parents of Joshua. Joshua died in 1744.
Joshua Wells (son of William Wells and Mary Youngs) was born 1667 in Southold, Suffolk Co, NY3208, 3209, and died Abt. 1744 in Southold, Suffolk Co, NY3210, 3211. He married Hannah Tuthill on 19 January 1685/86 in Southold, Suffolk Co, NY3212, 3213, daughter of John Tuthill and Deliverance King.
Joshua Wells, son of William Wells and Mary (Youngs?) was born in Southold, Long Island and died there, age 80, surviving his elder brother William nearly half a century. In the Rate List of Southold, 1683, being then nineteen, he is assessed for 81 pounds. Various deeds with his name are recorded from 1684 to 1715.
He is generally known as "Justice Joshua", having been a magistrate for many years. He seems to have also been a carpenter, as the will of Captain Horton, 1699, puts his son David "apprentice to Mr. Joshua Wells" till he comes of age, "Mr. Wells to profit him in his reading, and learning him to write, and instructing him in carpenter work."
He was a farmer as well, inheriting, like nearly all the sons of the settlers, a large landed estate, lying in great part, it would seem, in Mattituck and Aquebogue. His grave is near those of his father and brother in the old churchyard of Southold Village. By the universal tradition of Southold, as well as of his descendants elsewhere, he was a man worthy in all respects of his father, whom he succeeded not only in some of his public duties, but in esteem and influence, especially after the early death of his elder brother William left him the only representative of the first William, his father. Justice Joshua Wells married, at Southold, Jan 19, 1686, Hannah Tuthill, sister of Elizabeth, his brother William's wife. They had fourteen children.
