Biography

Capt. Josiah Standish, son of Capt. Myles Standish, was born abt 1633 in Plymouth Colony, Massachusetts. He died on 19 March 1690 in Preston, New London County, Connecticut. A Captain in the Plymouth Colony Militia who participated in King Philip's War, Standish, along with Captain Benjamin Church, led a raiding party that tracked the Wampanoag chief, Metacomet to Mt. Hope, Rhode Island. Finding the chief hiding in a swamp, one of his men, an Indian named John Alderman shot Metacomet.

"...The History of Norwich, CT, by Miss F.M. Caulkins, published 1845, available free on-line, references Capt. Josiah Standish on pg. 118: "as owner of a farm east of the Shetucket. . . . He is supposed to have had in his possession the sword of his father (Myles Standish), and though the house in which he lived was destroyed by fire, this relic was preserved." Now in Pilgrim Hall, but another sword in Mass. Hist. Soc. Miss Caulkins suggests Myles might have had 2 swords! ..." Source: Linda Sue Standish


Marriage & Family

Josiah Standish was born about 1633 and died in Preston, Connecticut, on March 19, 1690. He was historically known as Capt. Josiah Standish. His burial place is unknown.[74] Josiah married first: Mary Dingley in Marshfield on December 19, 1654 and died in Duxbury on July 1, 1655. Second, Sarah Allen after 1655 and had eight children. She died after September 16, 1690.

He married first in 1656 Mary Dingley of Marshfield, MA who died 6 months later, second he married Sarah Allen (daughter of Samuel Allen) around 1660. Josiah and Sarah Standish children: Josiah, (Reverend, lived/died in Stafford, CT) Mary, Mehitable, Martha, Samuel, Israel, Lois and Mercy Standish (Mercy[dau. of Rev. Josiah Standish of Stafford, CT], m. Rev. Eleazer Wheelock, b. 1711,of Windham, CT, who founded Dartmouth College).
