Biography

Lemuel Sturtevant II was born 9 November 1756 in Halifax Beach, Halifax, Plymouth County, Massachusetts, United States to Lemuel Sturtevant (1711-1789) and Deborah Bryant (1717-1805) and died 15 November 1839 Barton, Orleans County, Vermont, United States of unspecified causes. He married Priscilla Thompson (1760-1842) 7 November 1778 in Middleborough, Plymouth County, Massachusetts, United States.


Lemuel was the 8th of at least 9 children (2nd son) born of Lemuel Sturtevant and his wife Deborah Bryant. Lemuel's siblings were Mary (b. 1741); Jesse (b. 1744); Else (b. 1745); Deborah (b. 1748); Samuel (b. 1750); Huldah (b. 1752); Luce (b. 1754); and Barze (b. 1763).

At the breakout of the Revolutionary War, even though his home was in Halifax, Plymouth County, Massachusetts, where his father resided, Lemuel lived at Bridgewater, Plymouth County, Massachusetts where he was an apprentice carpenter and house joiner.

On the day of the Battle of Lexington, April 19, 1775, Lemuel, being a Minute Man, was out in a Regiment of Minute Men when news came of the battle. The next day they set out for the scene of the action and marched to Milton and Braintree in Captain James Allen's Company, Colonel John Bailey's Regiment of Massachusetts State Troops. After a few days on May 1, 1775, Lemuel enlisted as a Private for 8 months in the same Company and Regiment. After serving out his time, he was discharged on January 1, 1776.

The same day of his previous discharge, Lemuel enlisted as a Private for a term of 1 year in Captain Earl Clapp's Company, Colonel Jonathan Ward's Massachusetts Regiment in the Continental Establishment (Line). The same Company in which his brother Jesse was Lieutenant. They were stationed at Roxbury and Dorchester until the British left Boston. Then they were marched to New York City. They arrived in New York about 10 or 15 days before it was evacuated by the American Army. Lemuel was put into a Company of carpenters and sent to and assisted in building Fort Washington where they were under the command of Colonel Putnam. After this they were marched to Dobb's Ferry, then to White Plains, thence to Peekskill, where they had a skirmish with the enemy's boats, and thence to King's Ferry where he was discharged the last day of December 1776.

Lemuel, after publishing his intention to marry on November 23, 1778 at Halifax, Plymouth County, Massachusetts, married, November 23, 1778 at Middleborough, Plymouth County, Massachusetts, Priscilla Tomson (1760-1842) by whom he had 13 children (6 sons and 7 daughters):

Lemuel moved from Halifax to Lyme, Grafton County, New Hampshire in the year 1780 where he resided about 19 years when he removed to Barton, Orleans County, Vermont where he was the 1st merchant in town, 1801, though he continued in business but a short time.
