Biography
Leverett Saltonstall was born 16 March 1825 in Salem, Essex County, Massachusetts, United States to Leverett Saltonstall (1783-1845) and Mary Elizabeth Sanders (1788-1858) and died 15 April 1895 Chestnut Hill, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States of unspecified causes. He married Rose Smith Lee (1835-1903) 19 October 1854 in Salem, Essex County, Massachusetts, United States.
From 1885 to 1889, he served as Collector of Customs for the Port of Boston under president Grover Cleveland. He gave John F. Fitzgerald a job as a customs inspector. Fitzgerald later became Mayor of Boston and championed major improvements to the port.
