Biography
Levi Stewart Udall was born 20 January 1891 in St. Johns, Apache County, Arizona, United States to David King Udall (1851-1938) and Eliza Luella Stewart (1855-1937) and died 30 May 1960 Wickenburg, Maricopa County, Arizona, United States of unspecified causes. He married Louisa Lee (1893-1974) 10 June 1914 in Salt Lake City, Utah, United States.
Levi S. Udall was a U.S. lawyer who served as Chief Justice of the Arizona Supreme Court. He was a member of the Udall political family.
Born and raised in Arizona, he was the son of David King Udall, a politician, and Eliza Stewart Udall, the first telegraph operator in the Arizona Territory. He was named after his grandfather, Levi Stewart. He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
In 1914 he married Louisa Lee, a granddaughter of John D. Lee and Jacob Hamblin. They would later have six children.
He passed the Arizona Bar exam in 1922, and was admitted to the bar, without having earned a law degree (a common practice in those days). Later that year he succeeded his father as stake president of the St. Johns Stake, a position he held until 1945.
In 1922, he lost a bid to be elected as clerk to the Arizona Superior Court. He was defeated by his older brother John Hunt Udall.
In 1946 he was elected to the Arizona Supreme Court, and remained a Justice of that court from 1947 until his death. In 1948 Udall wrote the majority opinion of the Arizona State Supreme Court granting Native Americans living on reservations the right to vote.[1] From 1951-1952 and 1957-1958 he served as the Chief Justice of that court.[2]
In 1960 he was awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from the University of Arizona. He died on May 30 of that year.
LDS Stake President (1927-45)
In 1927 Levi was appointed by the church to succeed his father to become the 2nd stake president of the St. Johns Arizona Stake of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving in that position to 1945. No stake president has it easy, only the nature of the problems change. It was lot to lead the church during the difficult times of the Great Depression and World War II.[1]
