Obituary

MRS. MARGARET JANE COWAN.

Still another of the old and worthy pioneers of the Manning has gone to her long rest. Mrs. Margaret Jane Cowan passed away on Monday evening at her home at Cundle, at an advanced age, in the shadow of 80 years. The late Mrs. Cowan was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Gill, of Dumaresque Island. She was married to the late Mr. David Cowan, who died over 30 years ago. Only last week it was our sad duty to report the passing of Mrs. Hogg, the grand old lady of Coopernook. a sister of deceased's husband, who was a teacher at Wherrol Flat at the time of his demise, 30 years ago. The late Mrs. Cowan, after her husband's death, took up residence in Cundle, where she enjoyed the highest regard of the whole community of that village and the Lower Manning, in which she was widely known. Her life was a hard one owing to the bereavements which she suffered and the loss early in life of her husband. Nevertheless, she wore her troubles with Christian fortitude. Kind and considerate, generous to a fault and charitable to the fullest extent of her means, the late Mrs. Cowan passes into the Unknown leaving behind a memory of which those who are left have every reason to be proud, and in addition a memory embellished by good deeds and true womanhood. Throughout the widowhood years of her life and throughout the bereavements which fell to her lot, she retained her high Christian beliefs and thus inspired others similarly situated to keep on lighting the good light. Of her family, only one son, Mr. Stanley Cowan, of Newcastle, survives, the deceased members of the family being Mr. William Cowan, Mr. Thomas Cowan and Mrs. W. W. Roger. The last-named was the first wife of the Rev. W. W. Roger, Methodist minister, well-known ou the Manning. Surviving brothers and sisters are: Messrs George Andrew Gill (Dumaresque Island), Edward J. Gill (Dumaresque Island), Mr. David Gill (Kolodong), Mrs. King (Crow's Nest), Mrs. T. R. Newton (Chatham), Mrs. A. B. I. Walker (Cremorne), Mrs. Carpenter (Warrawee), and Miss Mary Gill (Taree). Deceased brother and sister were Mr. William Henry Gill and Miss Laura Gill. The funeral will leave to-day (Wednesday), at 1, for the Dawson cemetery, when the remains will be interred in the Methodist portion. Mr. W. T. Howard is the undertaker.
