Pvt Martin Potter was born 17 May 1819 in Harrison County, West Virginia to David Potter (1760-1838) and Elizabeth Vaughan (1762-1831) and died 19 April 1863 Helena, Phillips County, Arkansas of unspecified causes. He married Susanna Kell (1817-1839) 26 August 1838 in Rising Sun, Ohio County, Indiana. He married Sarah Ann Ballard (1824-1852) in Dearborn, Indiana. He married Mary Shaw (1822-1900) 5 October 1853 .

Potter, Martin. Age 43. Residence Little Sioux,Iowa Nativity Virginia. Enlisted Aug. 18, 1862 into Co C 29th Iowa Infantry. Mustered Nov. 9, 1862 Council Bluffs,Iowa.

Died of disease April 30, 1863, Post Hospital, Helena, Ark. Based on others that died at Helena, buried originally Helena. Then in 1867 exhumed and moved to Memphis Nat. Cemetery. Many marked as unknowns due to poor record keeping.

29th Iowa Infantry

Civil War Veteran - 29th Iowa

The 29th Iowa Infantry was organized at Council Bluffs, Iowa and mustered in for three years of Federal service on December 1, 1862.

The regiment was mustered out on August 10, 1865.

A total of 1485 men served in the 29th Iowa at one time or another during its existence. It suffered 1 officer and 42 enlisted men who were killed in action or who died of their wounds and 1 officer and 266 enlisted men who died of disease, for a total of 310 fatalities.

SERVICE.--Guard Prison at Benton Barracks, Mo., until December 25, 1862. Moved to Columbus, Ky., en route to Helena, Ark., December 25-29. Duty there until January 8, 1863. Moved to Helena, Ark., January 8, and duty there until March. Gorman's Expedition up White River January 11-26. Yazoo Pass Expedition and operations against Fort Pemberton and Greenwood March 13-April 5. Duty at Helena until August.
