Obituary

There died at South Gundagai on Saturday evening last Mrs. Jones, wife of Mr Thomas Jones, one of the oldest and most respected residents of the district. Deceased had enjoyed good health up till 12 months ago, and during the past month her condition grew worse. Last week a collapse set in, and death was hourly expected.

However, deceased lingered till Saturday, when she succumbed to hemorrhage of the brain. Born on the Nepean River 70 years ago, the late Mrs Jones came to Gundagai district in the year 1850, and was residing with her parents in Hanley Cottage (now occupiod by Mr Tout) at the time of the big '52 flood, when the old township of Gundagai was swept away. Up till a few weeks before her death she could relate many graphic incidents of the flood. In '62 the deceased was married to Mr T. Jones, and, with her husband, went to live at Tarrabandra and afterwards at Big Ben, where they remained till 12 months ago, when they sold out and came to South Gundagai to spend the remainder of their days in peace. The deceased is survived by her husband, four sons, seven daughters, 40 grandchildren and one great grandchild.

She also leaves a sister, Mrs Freestone, sen. (Gundagai) and a brother, Mr E. Harris (Bondo). Deceased's daughters are: Mrs Boon (Gilmore), Mrs Hardwick (Big Ben), Mrs T Carr (Tumut), Mrs Waters (Sydney), Mrs Kiss (The Lachlan), Mrs Harper (Oberne), Mrs B. Callaghan (South Gundagai). The sons are: Messrs William, Harry and Ern. Jones, of South Gundagai, and Mr Herb. Jones, of Yarrangobilly. The funeral on Monday afternoon was largely attended, the remains being interred in the C.E. cemetery, South Gundagai.

The last prayers were read by the Rev. A. Kelynack.
