Pafford Martin, as he was known, was a large landowner, farmer and entrepreneur in the Stilson area of southern Bulloch County, Georgia. I am told that he raised livestock and sold fertilizer, securing it in Savannah and then selling it to nearby farmers. He also grew tobacco and was a "tobacco demonstrator", a position demanding experience and respect among his fellow farmers. As a tobacco demonstrator, he would, upon request, advise other farmers about their tobacco crops. This may have included checking another farmer's tobacco to determine if it was ready to be harvested and then cured in tobacco barns. He also sold kerosene burners to replace the wood-burning stoves generally in use in these curing barns. As if that was not enough, he also sold crop insurance for hail damage.

He may have been a member of the Bulloch County Farm Bureau, but that is mere speculation for now. Outside of farming, he was a member of Hubert United Methodist Church in Stilson. He was killed when he drove into the back of an unlit log truck (or possibly a tow motor) at night.
