For several centuries, since the union of the Crowns under James VI of Scotland, who became James I of England, monarchs of Scotland have also been monarchs of England.

In earlier times, kings ruled the Scots and sometimes the Picts, and sometimes areas such as Dalriada and Strathclyde, seldom ruling the whole of what is Scotland today. For convenience we classify them all in Category:Monarchs of Scotland.

For listing since 1066, see British Monarchs.
