Biography

Moses Hatch was born 4 March 1662 in Falmouth, Barnstable County, Massachusetts to Jonathan Hatch (1625-1710) and Sarah Rowley (1625-1710) and died 20 May 1747 Falmouth, Barnstable County, Massachusetts of unspecified causes. He married Hepzibah Eddy (1665-1716) 9 May 1686 in Barnstable County, Massachusetts. He married Elizabeth Thacher (1677-1710) 18 October 1699 in Yarmouth, Barnstable County, Massachusetts. He married Hannah Scudder (1651-1739) 1712 in Barnstable County, Massachusetts. He married Patience Perry (1692-1788) 12 March 1739 in Falmouth, Barnstable County, Massachusetts.


Moses Hatch was the first white child born in Falmouth, Massachusetts. He received his name because he was born on a bed of bull-rushes in a temporary cabin, the roof of which was a whale—boat turned keel up.

Married at Falmouth, Mass. or Tisbury, Martha's Vineyard, Hepzibah EDDY, daughter of John and Hepzibah (Daggett) Eddy. Moses Hatch’s wife died before or about 1698. He md. 2nd 18 Oct., 1699, ELIZABETH THATCHER daughter of Colonel JOHN Thatcher of Yarmouth, Mass. She died 18 May, 1710 at Falmouth, Mass. He married third MRS. HANNAH BANGs (widow of Joshua Bangs) (sic) who died 13 May, 1739, md. 4th at Sandwich, Mass. 12 Mar., 1739/40 MRS. PATIENCE PERRY, who survived him. Moses Hatch was a man of considerable note and influence in his day. He was a member of the Barnstable church, afterwards of Falmouth Church at its foundation. He was always one of the main pillars of the church till his death. He was owner of considerable estates and one of the prominent men of the town. Moses Hatch was chosen as Town Clerk and in 1733 he was chosen as Town Agnet and Juryman to High Court. He gave to the town of Falmouth the land where the first church was built and later became the public square. He died at age 84.
