Biography

Moses Spalding was born 20 March 1797 in Ipswich, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, United States to Isaac Spalding (1765-1830) and Mary Ritter (1773-1808) and died 12 April 1879 Wilton, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, United States of unspecified causes. He married Anna Hunt Kimball (1800-1864) 29 May 1823 in Wilton, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, United States. He married Lucy Brown (1807-1877) 29 May 1823 in Temple, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, United States.


His educational opportunities were limited to the primitive district school system of that day, but his natural intelligence enabled him to acquire knowledge through other channels, and he developed rapidly into an unusually able business man.

As a youth he left home, and going to Nashua, NH, entered a clothing store as a clerk. In 1846, (age 18) he located in Lawrence, where he shortly afterward established himselft as a clothing merchant at 163 Essex Street, and for many years he carried on a large and profitable business, accumulating a substantial fortune. His residence was at 36 East Haverhill Street.

He obtained the charter for the Merrimack Valley horse railroad and a member of many other institutions.
