Obituary

JOURNALIST'S DEATH.
Mr. M. L. MacCallum.

The death occurred suddenly from heart failure at his residence late on Monday night of Mr. Mungo L. MacCallum, of the editorial staff ot the "Sydney Morning Herald."

The elder son of Sir Mungo MacCallum, Emeritus Professor of Modern Literature at the University of Sydney, Mr. MacCallum was born in Wales in 1884, his father at that time being Professor of English Literature and History at the University College of Wales, and received his preliminary education at Glasgow High School and at the Sydney Grammar School. He graduated as Bachelor of Arts at the University of Sydney, and, selected in 1906 as Rhodes Scholar, he proceeded to Oxford, where he obtained the degree of Master of Arts and Bachelor of Civil Law. He was called to the Bar at the Inner Temple in 1910. Returning to Sydney, he at first acted as associate to Mr. Justice A. H. Simpson, at that time Chief Judge In Equity, and then started to practise his profession, having an appointment also as tutor in classics and law at St. Andrew's College. Later he was appointed lecturer in Roman law at the Sydney University.

At the outbreak of war Mr. MacCallum was appointed to the censorship office, being in charge of the Sydney branch for some time, and he served in this capacity till the armistice.

Mr. MacCallum had at various times since 1912 been a contributor to the "Herald," and, having proved himself to be a writer of more than ordinary ability he was persuaded to adopt journalism as a profession, and joined the editorial staff in 1919. He had a cultured and charming style, and for many years was the chief book reviewer. His scholarship was a valuable asset, both in the strenuous activities of journalism and in the help he gave the University as an examiner. He was ready with accurate knowledge and sound judgment, whether as a literary critic or as a legal authority, when the occasion demanded comment in leading articles. He read widely, and his ability as a linguist completed a fine mental equipment.

Mr. MacCallum is survived by Mrs. MacCallum, a daughter of the late Mr. G. M. Bellardie, of Ceylon, and three sons and one daughter. His brother is Dr. Walter Maccallum and his sister Mrs. Lightoller, wife of Dr. G. S. Lightoller, of Edgecliff.

The funeral took place yesterday afternoon at the Crematorium, the Rev. H. W. Barder conducting the service.
