Nancy Hanks Hall was born circa 5 February 1780 in Amelia County, Virginia to Joseph Hanks (1725-1793) and Nancy Lee (1728-1808) and died 5 October 1829 Gentryville, Spencer County, Indiana of milk sickness. She married Levi Hall (1785-1829) 18 October 1802 in Kentucky.

Nancy Hanks Hall was an aunt to Nancy Hanks (1784-1818), the mother of US President Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865). Her first child Dennis Friend Hanks (1799-1892) was born out of wedlock and prior to her relationship to Levi Hall. Dennis moved into the home of his famous cousin and would be a childhood friend and older brother to the future president and a source of much of the history that we know about childhood.
