Biography
Nathan William Tanner was born 19 October 1870 in Wanslip, Summit County, Utah, United States to John William Tanner (1842-1893) and Lucy Rhoena Snyder (1848-1917) and died 12 June 1948 Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County, Utah, United States of unspecified causes. He married Sarah Edna Brown (1878-1959) 28 April 1897 in Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County, Utah.
Nathan William Tanner and his twin brother, George, were born October 19, 1870, sons of John William Tanner and Lucy Rhoena Snyder Tanner, in Wanship, Summit County, Utah. He lived in Wyoming until he was 26 years of age, most of the time in Cokeville. After his father's death (January 13, 1896) he was responsible for helping his mother in rearing and caring for the family. He moved to Salt Lake City, Utah in the spring of 1896, and was baptized April 6, 1896.
In the summer of 1896 he decided to go to Southern Alberta, Canada, along with others, and crossed the border into Canada on July 14. There he bought shares in the Alberta Land and Livestock company and worked for this company through the summer.
He returned to Salt Lake City that winter, and on April 28, 1897, he married Sarah Edna Brown, daughter of Homer Manley and Lydia Jane (Brown) Brown, in the Salt Lake Temple. He and his brid left for Canada on June 2, 1897 by team and wagon. Here he really pioneered. He worked for Charley McCarty, and in 1898 he acquired a homestead near Aetna with his brother, Henry. He was ordained bishop of the Aetna Ward in Alberta Stake in December of 1902, which position he held until January, 1918, when he moved to Cardston, Alberta. He was first counselor to Bishop Charles Burt of the Cardston First Ward until he moved his family back to Salt Lake City, UT in 1922. During his stay in Southern Alberta he held many responsible positions, such as Secretary to the School Board in Aetna, and was a member of the School Board for 12 years. He was road supervisor, postmaster, and assisted in building the Alberta Stake Tabernacle and the Alberta Stake Tabernacle and the Alberta Temple. He was always active in the Church, was considered an outstanding teacher, and was blessed with the power of healing. No man could have been loved and respected more by those who knew him. He and his lovely wife, Edna, who stood by him through all the hardships of pioneer life, had eight children - five sons and three daughters. > From book "descendants of Nathan Tanner Sr."
