Nathaniel Burroughs was born 1609 in Pettaugh, Debanham, Suffolk, England to George Burroughs (1579-1653) and Frances Sparrow (1583-1621) and died 23 March 1682 Stepney, London, Greater London, England of unspecified causes. He married Rebekah Style (1614-1685) 1649 in England.
Nathaniel Burroughs was purportedly a merchant/mariner in Maryland and Massachusetts. During his son’s childhood, records document Nathaniel’s travels between Maryland and Massachusetts Bay. Records also show in 1657 Rebecca joined the church in Roxbury, Massachusetts, and was dismissed in 1674 to return to England. Rebecca (Stiles) Burrough was buried 26 March 1679 in Stepney, Middlesex, England. Nathaniel was buried there 6 March 1682. [1]
- In England, the surname most often was spelled Burrough without the S, but there were a dozen variations.
Marriage and Family
- George Burroughs (1650-1692) - English immigrant to America where he became the only minister executed for witchcraft during the course of the Salem witch trials. He is best known for reciting the Lord's Prayer during his execution, something it was believed a witch could never do. He was the namesake of his grandfather who had been an eminent minister in England.
