Nicolae Docan was born 24 May 1874 to Gheorghe Docan (1837-1899) and Natalia Apostol (1857-1929) and died 4 April 1933 Tomești, Vaslui County, Moldavia, Romania of unspecified causes.

Nicolae Docan was a Romanian numismatist. He studied old coins and wrote various technical articles dealing with old coins of the Romanian principalities such as Notiță despre monetele lui Petru Mușat (1907) and Studii privitoare la numismatica Țării Românești (1910). He also had an important collection of coins.

He was also concerned with cartography publishing the study: Memoriu despre lucrările cartografice privitoare la războiul din 1787-1791 (1912). His history studies concentrated mainly on problems of chronology, which he finalized in the study Despre elementele cronologice în documentele românești (1910).

As writer he is known for the book Povestire în versuri încă necunoscută despre domnia lui Mavrogheni (1911).

On 25 May 1915 he was elected corresponding member of the Romanian Academy.

At his death he left his coin collection and all his estate to the Romanian Academy.
