Peter Coffin was born 1580 in Brixton, Devonshire, England to Nicholas Coffin (1555-1613) and Joan Coffin (1558-1614) and died 13 March 1628 Brixton, Devonshire, England of unspecified causes. He married Joanna Kember (1584-1661) 1599 in Devonshire, England.

1642 Family Sails to America

In 1642 his son Tristram emigrated to America with his wife Dionis and five small children as well as his widowed mother (Joanna Kember) and two unmarried sisters. What was the cause of this emigration is not known. Tristram was of the landed gentry and had inherited from his father. But there was political trouble between the king and Parliament and the New World was calling with an ever stronger voice. It is thought that they sailed in one of four ships owned by Robert Clement (the Hector, Griffin, Job Clement and Margaret Clement).

  1. John Coffin (1607-1642) - died in battle fighting for Royalists at Fort Plymouth
  2. Tristram Coffin (1605-1681) - emigrated with family to Nantucket
  3. Joan Coffin (1611-)
  4. Deborah Coffin (1616-)
  5. Mary Coffin (1621-1691) - emigrated to America 1642, married Alexander Adams c1644.
