Alden was born 30 October 1835 in Ludlow, Hampden County, Massachusetts to Washington Brown Alden (1799-1859) and Hannah Bartlett (1805-) and died 1920 Holyoke, Hampden County, Massachusetts of unspecified causes. He married Eliza Dutton (1839-1881) 19 November 1851 in Hampden County, Massachusetts.

Philo Washington Alden, CIVIL WAR SOLDIER. He was a 25 year old farmer when he enlisted in the Union Army. Enlisted in Co I,MASSACHUSETTS 46th Inf. Reg. on 24 Sept. 1862. Mustered out on 29 July 1863 at Hampden Park,Springfield,MA.
