The Principality of Shumsk is one of the Russian principalities that existed in the XII-XIII centuries, the inheritance of the Principality of Volhynia. The center of the principality was the city of Shumsk (now a city of regional importance in the Ternopil Oblast of Ukraine).
History[]
The principality of Shumsk was first mentioned in 1152 among the possessions of the Prince of Lutsk Yaroslav Izyaslavich. Under the contract with his brother, Mstislav Izyaslavich , Yaroslav Igorevich was assigned the eastern part of Volhynia, including Shumsk. In 1211 Shumsk, and a number of other towns of Volhynia, were governed by Prince of Lutsk Ingvar Yaroslavich [1][2][3].
After the death of Ingvar Yaroslavich, the Principality of Shumsk was ruled by his son or grandson Svyatoslav , who died in the Battle of the Kalka River on May 31, 1223 [3], after which the references to the princes of Shumsk disappear.
