Rhoda Richards Smith Young was born 8 August 1784 in Framingham, Middlesex County, Massachusetts to Joseph Richards (1762-1840) and Rhoda Howe (1762-1838) and died 17 January 1879 Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County, Utah of unspecified causes. She married Joseph Smith (1805-1844) June 1843 in Nauvoo, Hancock County, Illinois. She married Brigham Young (1801-1877) 31 January 1846 in Nauvoo, Hancock County, Illinois.


Biography

1848 Migration to Utah

Rhoda Richards traveled west to Utah with her brother, Willard Richards (1804-1854), in his 1848 wagon pioneer company.

526 individuals were in the company when it began its journey from the outfitting post at Winter Quarters, Nebraska. This company was divided into two sections, Willard Richards section and Amasa Lyman Section. The Lyman section left the outfitting post on 1 July and the Richards section left on 3 July.

Members of the company arrived from 10-19 October 1848.


Marriage & Family

Mrg June 1843 / Age 58 - 1st cousin of Brigham Young (1801-1877) whom she married after Smith's death. Sealed to Joseph Smith, Jr. for eternity and Young for time.

1st Marriage: Joseph Smith

Rhoda Richards was a polygamous wife (#29) to the Mormon Prophet, Joseph Smith (1805-1844), but they had no children together.

2nd Marriage: Brigham Young

After Joseph's martyrdom, this widow married her 1st cousin and Joseph's successor, Brigham Young (1801-1877) as his 32nd wife. She was age 61 and he 44 at this time. (31 June 1846 - Nauvoo IL) They had no children together.
