Robert ran a jewllers in Horsefair, Birmingham with his son William: "R. B. Hammond and Sons". They declared bankruptcy in 1878[1].
In 1851, Robert was staying at a temperance hotel in Halifax, a traveller selling "paper hangings"[2]. He lived with his wife and daughter in London in 1861[3].
In 1881, the family had moved to the Kings Norton area of Birmingham, and lived at 240 Balsall Heath Road. Robert is seemingly absent[4]. In 1891, they lived at 140 Church Road, and Robert is described as paralyzed.
