Obituary
Robert Blackman, of Linburn, one of the grand old pioneers of the Mudgee district, has been gathered to his fathers. On Sunday last he was stricken down while on a visit to his son Richard, of "Coonaroo," Munghorn, and was conveyed to Braeholme private hospital, Mudgee, where the end came on Tuesday evening. He had reached the great age of 90 years, and up till Sunday last had enjoyed excellent health.
The son of Robert Blackman, of Kelso, Bathurst district, the subject of this notice was in the early days attracted by the stories of riches to be won on the gold fields, and followed mining pursuits for many years with varying fortune. About half a century ago he came to Mudgee and settled on the land in the Linburn and Cooyal district, where he remained till the final call.
The Blackman family has been closely associated with the progress of the west since the very early days. One of his ancestors was prominent in exploration work and his name appears on the obelisk in Market Street, Mudgee as a member of the band of hardy pioneers who made settlement possible in this great district. His brothers Henry, Charles and James, and cousin, Samuel A. Blackman, Cooyal, were all noted men in their day.
In the strenuous political fights of the past, the late Robert Blackman was a foremost figure. Clean and honorable, he fought vigorously on the side of the free traders, and he was always a power to be reckoned with in days when many political giants adorned the stage.
A firm friend and supporter of Mr. R. Jones, ex M.L.A., Mudgee, he spared neither time nor money to advance that gentleman's claims for Parliamentary honors, and played no small part in his election to the Assembly.
The district has lost a grand character by his death, and there was deep sorrow in homes far and wide when the news of his demise became known.
He is survived by the following sons and daughters, to whom we extend sincere sympathy : Richard H. ("Coonaroo," Munghorn), Robert (Moolarben), Alfred (Brisbane), Herbert (Bankstown), Edgar (Linburn), Mrs. V. Kerr Bondi), Miss Catherine (Linburn). There are a number of grand and great grandchildren.
The funeral took place in the Methodist portion of the Mudgee Cemetery on Wednesday, the Rev. S. R. Robbins officiating at the graveside.
Mr. W. Barton conducted the funeral arrangements.
