Robert Greene of Gillingham was born circa 1480 to John Greene (c1450-) .
Robert was a son of "John Greene the Fugitive". He bought an estate called Bowridge Hill or Porridge Hill at Gillingham in Dorset and was described in a 1543 subsidy roll as "an elderly man with grandchildren". Two of his descendants became prominent citizens of Rhode Island: Surgeon John Greene (grandson of son and heir Richard) and John Greene of Quidnessett (grandson of son John); each has numerous recorded descendants, some through intermarriage between branches of the family.
