The brothers, Edmund and Robert Lockwood, came to Salem in the "Arbella" with Governor John Winthrop's Fleet in 1630. The 400 new arrivals could not stay in Salem because there was not enough fresh water, so they started a new settlement called Boston. Robert was a proprietor of Watertown, MA. In 1636, he was made Freeman with the right to vote. In 1636, he moved to Fairfield, CT. Between 1645 and 1652, he served as "Sergent" of the Fairfield County, CT Regiment. Robert served as Representative to the Connecticut Legislature in 1671, 1673, 1674, and 1677.
About 1632 he married Susanna Norman (b.1608 d. December 23,1680 in Greenwich, CT. She was a daughter of Margaret Alford & Capt. Richard Norman, of Dorchester, England who had settled in Cape Ann, MA in 1626. Their children were: Jonathan Lockwood, b: 9/10/1634 d: 5/12/1688; Deborah Lockwood, b: 10/12/1636; Joseph Lockwood, b: 8/06/1638 d: 4/17/1717; Daniel Lockwood, b: 3/21/1639-40 d: 1691; Ephraim Lockwood, b: 12/01/1641 d: 10/1685; Gersham Lockwood, Sr., b: 9/06/1643 d: 3/12/1718-19; John Lockwood, b: 1645 d: 1677; Abigail Lockwood, b: 1647 d: 1690; Sarah Lockwood, b: 1649 d: 3/01/1650-51; Sarah Lockwood, b: 2/27/1651-52; Mary Lockwood, b: 1647; and possibly Joshua Lockwood, b: 1638 whose parentage has not been proven.
In 1635 Robert Lockwood was appointed executor for his late brother Edmund's estate and children: Edmund Lockwood (b: ca 1625 in Combs, Suffolk, Eng. d: Jan. 31, 1692-93 Stamford, CT) and John Lockwood (b: ca 1631-2 in Cambridge, MA d: 1683 New London CT). Robert raised his nephew Edmund with his own children.
