Obituary

MR ROBERT TURNBULL.

It is our duty to chronicle the passing, after a long illness, of an old and highly-respected resident in the person of Mr. Robert Turnbull, which sad event took place at the residence of his daughter (Mrs. A. T. Boulton) last Sunday night, the venerable old gentleman having attained the advanced age of 78 years.

On Monday afternoon, after a short service at the residence, the funeral (under control of Mr. Dalton) proceeded to Macksville Cemetery, where the Church of England Burial Service and Orange service was conducted by Rev. E. G. Huntley, the M.U.I.O.O.F. Service being read by Bro. R. Wilson, District Master.

Born in Scotland, and coming to this country with his parents at a very early age, the late Mr. Turnbull started his career in the Education Department, continuing as a teacher for about 20 years in the Bega and Bombala districts. He later took up farming at Burrawang, coming to Macksville in 1897. He was well known at each place as an ardent Church worker and Sunday School teacher, and in several places formed the Sunday Schools. Before illness overtook him he was a good townsman, never too busy to lend a helping hand, and was an active member of the M.U.I.O.O.F. and L.O. Lodges. Mrs. Turnbull, who survives, is one of the best known ladies in local Church and charitable movements. The surviving sons are Robert B. (of the staff of the Technical College, Sydney), Andrew W. (Tasmania), Harold E. (Chatswood), Edgar M. (Warrell Creek), Allan H. (Temora), Ernest G. (Concord). The daughters are Mrs. W. W. Gilbert (Concord), and Mrs. A. T. Boulton, (Macksville).

Two sons paid the supreme sacrifice during the Great War. [Incorrect: one in the Boer War, one in World War I]
