Biography
In 1252, under contract with the Hungarian King White IV, Daniil married his son, Roman to the niece of the Austrian Duke Friedrich Babenberg, the daughter of his brother Heinrich, Gertrude. Gertrude was the heir to the Austrian throne, which gave Roman the right to make claims on Austria and Styria.
The Czech prince Ottokar, who at the end of 1251 joined the army in Austria, forced the Austrian barons to elect him as duke. Ottokar believed that he had some dynastic rights to the Austrian throne, since Gertrude was the first time married to his brother Vladislav, who died in 1247. In February 1252, Ottokar officially consolidated his position in Austria, marrying the elderly Margarethe von Babenberg, the eldest among the sisters of the late Duke, who was also the widow of the German Emperor Heinrich VII of Hohenstaufen.
Soon Roman was besieged by the superior forces of the Czech king Ottokar in the castle of Gimberga, located not far from Vienna. Convinced that Roman's case was lost, the Hungarian King Bela IV himself began to claim the Austrian lands that still remained under the power of Gertrude. In late 1253, Roman had to flee hastily from Austria and return to Novgorod.
In 1255, after the seizure of Lithuanian land by Daniil Romanovich, Prince Vaišvilkas, on his own behalf and on behalf of his father Mindaugas, gave Roman the rule in several cities - Novogrudok from Mindaugas, Volkovysk and Slonim from himself.
In 1258 Vaišvilkas and Tautvilas (c1225-1263) conspired and killed Roman Daniilovich.
