Roman Rostislavich Rurik of Kiev, Prince of Smolensk, Prince of Novgorod, Grand Prince of Kiev, was born 1132 to Rostislav Mstislavich of Kiev (c1110-1167) and died 1180 Smolensk, Smolensk Oblast, Russia of unspecified causes. He married Mariya Svyatovlavna of Novgorod-Seversky (1140-1175) .
Roman Rostislavich (about 1132/1135[1] - June 14, 1180) is the son of Rostislav Mstislavich. Prince of Smolensk[2] and Novgorod and the Grand Prince of Kiev (1171-1173, 1174-1176).
Biography
In 1151 he helped Izyaslav Mstislavich to defend Kiev from |Yuri Dolgoruky, contributed much to the defeat of the latter in the Battle of the Ruta River and defended Chernigov from him. The following year he helped Izyaslav against Svyatoslav Olgovich.
When after Izyaslav Mstislavich's death, Roman's father Rostislav Mstislavich in 1154 briefly occupied the throne of Kiev, in 1154, while Roman reigned in Novgorod. In 1158 he participated in Rogvolod Borisovich's campaing against other princes of Polotsk, in 1159 he joined Svyatoslav Olgovich's campaign against Svyatoslav Vladimirovich, in 1169 he supported the capture of Kiev by Andrei of Bogolyubovo's troops and then in his campaign Novgorod.
After the death of Gleb Yuryevich and Vladimir Mstislavich in Kiev in 1171, Andrei of Bogolyubovo installed Roman as Grand Prince of Kiev, but two years later, angered by Roman's refusal to extradite the Kiev boyars suspected of killing Prince Gleb Yuryevich, forced him to leave Kiev for Smolensk. Roman obeyed Andrei's will, in contrast to his younger brothers. After Andrei's unsuccessful campaign in the Grand Principality of Kiev and the siege of Vyshgorod (1173), Mstislav Izyaslavich's younger brother, Yaroslav, who had been deposed in 1169, was enthroned Grand Prince of Kiev. After Andrei of Bogolyubovo (1974) took the throne of Kiev [3]. When he was reigning in of Kiev, Roman left his eldest son Yaropolk in charge of Smolensk.
In 1176 the Russian troops, led by the Roman's brothers Rurik and Davyd, were defeated by the Polovtsians. The culprit of the defeat were Davyd. Svyatoslav Vsevolodovich, prince of Chernigov the Grand Prince of Kiev to put Davyd on trial and to deprive him of his share in the Russian land, mainly the inheritance in the Grand Principality of Kiev. Roman eluded these actions and, in the same year, was forced to leave Kiev in favor of Svyatoslav.
Roman died in Smolensk in 1180 , after spending one year (1179) in Novgorod.
