Rostislav Mstislavich (c1212-c1240), Prince of Smolensk (1230-1232), Grand Prince of Kiev (1239-1240). The son of Mstislav Davydovich the Younger. He is mentioned as Rostislav Borisovich (using his father's baptismal name), in connection with the Council of Kiev (1231).
Biography
Rostislav Mstislavich took the throne of Smolensk after Mstislav Davydovich's death in 1230. In 1232 he was expelled by Svyatoslav Mstislavich, with the help of troops from Polotsk. Svyatoslav died, around 1238, and was replaced by Vsevolod Mstislavich. Lithuanians invaded the Principality of Smolensk but were defeated in 1239 by Yaroslav Vsevolodovich of Vladimir, who returned the throne of Smolensk to Vsevolod Mstislavich.
After the Mongol campaign in the Principality of Chernigov, Mongols led by Möngke Khan appeared on the left bank of the Dnieper in front of Kiev (R.P. Khrapachevsky [1], the supporter version of Möngke Khan's winter campaign in the Northern Caucasus, dates this event in early spring 1240 ). Mikhail Vsevolodovich Grand Prince of Kiev]] fled to Hungary, after which Rostislav arrived in Kiev from Smolensk, but was expelled by Daniil of Halych, who installed his governor Dmitri in Kiev .
According to A. A. Gorsky , the restoration of Vsevolod Mstislavich in Smolensk and of Rostislav Mstislavich in Kiev was associated with the campaign of Yaroslav Vsevolodovich of Vladimir in the winter of 1239/40, during which Mikhail Vsevolodovich's family was captured in Kamenets, as recorded in the Lavrentiev Chronicle. However, M. Grushevsky and A. V. Mayorov believe that the family of Mikhail Vsevolodovich's family was captured by Yaroslav Ingvarevich.
