Samuel Appleton I was born before 13 August 1586 in Little Waldingfield, Suffolk, England, United Kingdom to Thomas Appleton (1550-1603) and Mary Isaac (1549-1613) and died 15 May 1670 Rowley, Essex County, Massachusetts, United States of unspecified causes. He married Judith Everard (1587-1633) 27 January 1616 in Preston St Mary, Suffolk, England, United Kingdom.

Biography

Samuel Appleton, the father of Major Samuel Appleton, was descended from the ancient family of Appulton of Waldingfield, Suffolk, England. He was the son of Thomas, and was born at Little Waldingfield in 1586; married Judith Everand, by whom he had six children born in England. John born 1622; Samuel born 1624, Sarah born 1629; Mary; Judith and Martha.

With his family he came to New England in 1635 and settled at Ipswich, Massachusetts, where he was admitted freeman, May 25, 1636. He was chosen deputy to the General Court, May 17th, 1637, and was prominent in the affairs if his town thereafter, and died at Rowley in June, 1670.

  2. Judith Appleton (1618-1629) - Judith married Samuel Rogers, son of Rev. Nathaniel, of Ipswich.
  3. Martha Appleton (1620-1659) - Martha married Richard Jacob, of Ipswich.
  4. John Appleton (1622-1699) - The eldest son John became an influential man in the colony. Was successively lieutenant, captain, and major, and deputy to the General Court for fifteen years between 1656 and 1678, and was honorably prominent in opposition to the Andros government. He married Priscilla Glover, by whom he had a large family, and died in 1699.
  5. Samuel Appleton (1624-1696) - A military and government leader in the Massachusetts Bay Colony and Province of Massachusetts Bay. He was a commander of the Massachusetts militia during King Philip's War who led troops during the Attack on Hatfield, Massachusetts and the Great Swamp Fight. He also held numerous positions in government and was an opponent of Governor Sir Edmund Andros.
