Samuel Appleton was born 22 June 1766 in New Ipswich, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire to Isaac Appleton (1731-1806) and Mary Adams (1741-1827) and died 12 July 1853 Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts of unspecified causes. He married Mary Lekain (1788-1870) November 1818 in Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts.
Biography
Samuel Appleton was an American merchant and philanthropist, active in New Hampshire, Massachusetts, and Great Britain. The city of Appleton, Wisconsin was named in his honor by Amos Lawrence.
He was of the noble Appleton Family of Boston Brahmin stature.
Early Life
Marriage and Family
After 1799 he passed much of his time in Britain, and at age 53 married a widow, Mrs. Mary Gore, with whom he had no children. He retired from business in 1823.
