Samuel moved to Irwin Township in Venango County, Pennsylvania, prior to the US Census of 1800 where he is listed as "Sal Dowty". Mayflower Families Through Five Generations identifies him with the Samual Doty found in the Derry Township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, census for 1800; however, an examination of the ages of family members shows that the Westmoreland County Samuel is this Samuel's father, Samual Doty (c1733-1817). The following table compares what would have been the age breakdown of the families of the two Samuels, had all the members of each family been living together in 1800, with the census configuations of the Samual Doty families in Derry Township, Westmoreland County and Irwin Township, Venango County.

                 Males          ||          Females
      |<10|10-15|16-25|26-44|>44||<10|10-15|16-25|26-44|>44|
Derry | 0 |  1  |  1  |  0  | 1 || 2 |  1  |  1  |  0  | 1 |
Sam Sr| 0 |  1  |  2  |  2  | 2 || 0 |  0  |  0  |  0  | 1 |
Sam Jr| 4 |  1  |  2  |  1  | 0 || 2 |  1  |  2  |  1  | 0 |
Irwin | 4 |  2  |  1  |  0  | 1 || 3 |  2  |  1  |  1  | 0 |

If one assumes that adult offspring have moved away from home, Samuel's configuration is closest to that of Sal Dowty of Irwin, and his father's is closest to that of Samuel Doty of Derry. Samuel's oldest daughter, Hannah, married Aaron Ausin about 1800, and on the census of Irwin Township the family of Moses Austin was recorded next to that of Sal Dowty. The Moses Auston houshold consisted of a man and woman over 44 and a man and woman between 16 and 25, which suggests that Hannah had married the boy next door and moved in with him and his parents. By 1810 Samuel had moved to Scrubgrass Township in Venango County, Pennsylvania, where the 1810 census records him next to his son Jacob. His son-in-law, Aaron Austin, is also living in Scrubgrass Township in 1810. Samuel moved to Ohio in 1812, and in 1814 he and his brother Daniel purchased the northwest quarter of section 8 T2R3, Liberty Township, Butler County, Ohio. In December of 1814 Samuel was asked by James Reynolds to go to Pennsylvania on business relating to land in Red Bank and Derry townships and to pay Jonathan Doty $85.[1]
