Capt Samuel Fletcher Cheney was born 1829 in Boscawen, Merrimack County, New Hampshire to Elias Eaton Cheney (1793-1859) and Lucy Fletcher (1803-) and died 1911 Gallia County, Ohio of unspecified causes. He married Harriet Barron (1833-1858) 4 October 1855 in Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts. He married Ella A Phillips (1840-1909) 24 September 1861 in Morrill County, Nebraska.


Biography

The 1870 Census shows Samuel, his new wife, baby Herbert, and Samuel daughter Ida from his first marriage.

Civil War History

Samuel Fletcher Cheney saw action in the bloody Civil War Battle of Chickamaunga as a sergeant with the 21st Ohio Volunteer Infantry. His unit followed General Sherman in his famous marched to the sea. He later became Captain of Co B in the 21st Ohio.


Burial

Per US Census reports: In 1900 Samuel and Ellen were living in Buffalo Co, NE. In 1910 he was living Norrill County NE. Ellen had returned to Gallia County OH where she died in 1909. Samuel died in 1911 and his body was brought to Gallia Co where he buried alongside his wife Ellen and daughter Belle Cheney Webster.
