Biography

Sarah Elizabeth Harmon Winters was born 18 August 1841 in Aberdeen, Monroe County, Mississippi, United States to James Harmon (1801-1851) and Mary Ann Blanks Smithson (1808-1897) and died 15 October 1888 Fresno, Fresno County, California, United States of unspecified causes. She married John Devers Winters (1830-1900) 1855 .

Sarah Elizabeth Harman: She stayed in California, married John Devers Winters and raised her family of ten children there. Their children were: #1 Ada who was married to a man by the name of Bryant, #2 Josephine or "Joie", was married to first husband John Goold, second William Carlton, and third Thomas Bell. She died at the age of 37. Child #3 was John Lathrop Winters who had two children. Child #5 was Winfred (boy or girl?). #7 Lottie married to someone referred to as B"G". Child #8 was Gertrude Francis who married first Mr Muton and had three children then to Thomas Bell. #Ira Lee who when his mother died, went to live with his aunt, Mary Eliza Nevers, after the death of Mary Eliza's husband and two of her children. After Mary Eliza's death he inherited her estate. He served in the State Assembly 1917 and served in the state senate from 1926 til sometime after 1941 in Ormsby County. His only brother, John Lathrop, was born in 1864 and was 12 years older than Ira. His other siblings were 8 sisters. He also named his son John Devers Nevers Winters. Child #10 was Mary Elizabeth Winters whose nickname was Libby.


Mississippi Saints 1846 Pioneer Company

Numbered amoung the participants in the Mississippi Saints 1846 Pioneer Company, a early Mormon pioneer wagon train that left Mississippi in 1846 to join the Mormon exodus to Utah. This group Brigham Young's vanguard company and spent the winter of 1846/47 at Fort Pueblo where the were joined by soldiers of the sick detachment of the Mormon Battalion. They reached Salt Lake City in late summer of 1847.
