Sarah Louisa Kilpack was born 1839 in Covent Garden, Greater London, England, United Kingdom to Thomas Kilpack (1794-1874) and Georgiana Unknown (-) and died 1909 of cancer.
Sarah Louisa was an artist, best known for her marine art. Some sources state that her mother is Georgiana[1], but the 1841 census returns suggest it could also or alternatively be Mary[2]. She lived with her father, Thomas (proprietor of Gliddon's Divan), his wife, and numerous siblings, in King Street, Covent Garden, in 1841, 1851[3], 1861 [4] and 1871[5].
Sarah was originally a pianist, giving her profession as 'professor pianoforte' in the 1861 census (at the age of 21). The Cardiff and Merthyr Guardian, Saturday, Jan. 17 1863 stated: "Miss Sarah Louisa Kilpack, of the Royal Academy of Music, made her West End débût as a pianiste a few night since, at St. James' Hall. The journals speak of her playing as remarkable for delicacy, finish, and high artistic feeling." [6]
From 1871, census returns give her profession as artist. In 1881, after her father's death, she lived with her sister Anastatia on Euston Road, St. Pancras. From 1891, the sisters were living on Elderfield Road, Hackney. The electoral roll gives Sarah's address as 32 Elderfield Road, Hackney, London from 1892 [7] until shortly after her death [8]. The Probate register states she never married, and her estate of £177 12s 7d was left to two women, Kate Scott (to whom her relationship is unclear) and Letitia Edith Obery (Sarah's niece, whose mother Charlotte seemingly died in childbirth.
