Savilla Durfee Gifford was born 24 July 1824 in Tiverton, Newport County, Rhode Island to Jabez Durfee (1791-1867) and Electa Cranston (1790-1834) and died 2 April 1897 Nauvoo, Hancock County, Illinois of unspecified causes. She married James Sweet Gifford (1828-1924) 22 October 1850 in Nauvoo, Hancock County, Illinois.

Biography[]

Savilla Durfey Gifford for many years was the helper of Emma Hale (1804-1879), wife of the Mormon prophet Joseph Smith (1805-1844). She was a dear friend of Emma’s and when her babies died she was allowed to bury them Smith Family Cemetery. Sevilla was the neice of Edmund Durfee (1788 - 1845) who was murdered on the Morley Settlement by anti-Mormon mobs in Nov 1845.
